A long line of fans brave the Manchester weather tonight, eagerly waiting for Mindless Self Indulgence to take to the stage in the UK for the first time in a couple of years. Luckily, I get to wait inside with a pint of cider in hand. Returning to the UK after the release of their re-mastered album ‘Tighter’, MSI are using this opportunity to reacquaint their mass of fans with their older material and remind us of the chaos they can create.

For your alternative sermon tonight, August Burns Red and The Devil Wears Prada will be preaching the word of our lord Jesus Christ. Don’t mention Veil Of Maya though, or He’ll smite you down. Crucifixes at the ready and let’s see those hands.

Thesaurus.com has over 100 synonyms for the word ‘brutal’, therefore, I have no excuse to use that word other than in this sentence. August Burns Red are one of the best metalcore bands around. Fact. Guitarist JB Brubaker stated that the genre “has almost become very formulaic, and metal to me was never a formulaic genre” and it’s safe to say that ABR are far from formulaic. They merely use hardcore as a foundation to build and then add flawless solos from all aspects of the band. The two support bands here tonight aren’t you standard hardcore bands either. So, with three destructive bands on the bill, you can expect there to be more breakdowns than a weekend in a mental hospital.

With the cold and windy weather of October taking control, there seems to be a fresh wave of pessimism across the land. I wake up most mornings wishing to just stay in my nice warm bed and do nothing for the rest of the day. Alas though, I cannot and I have to trudge into university, all shivering and cold. The only thing that seems the put a smile on my face is the summer sounds of pop-punk so I, along with many others, am really looking forward to the optimistic vibes of tonight’s show.

After a year-long wait for Down to return, they embark on their 3-date UK run, starting with Manchester. The queue outside the Academy stretches long around the building before people cram into the huge venue, packing it to the back. There’s anticipation in the air and you can already tell that this is going to be a memorable show.

Despite the early doors (because SO many people go to Ramshackle at 10pm, right?), there’s a healthy crowd for Texas’ Upon A Burning Body (****). Looking both smart and foreboding in their mafia-esque stage attire, they immediately command a presence, demanding pits and hand waving aplenty. The specifics of the guitar work is lost in the mix a little and the breakdowns seem to be happening every 5 seconds, but it’s exactly what’s needed. There’s a hearty singalong to ‘Intermission’ and ‘Texas Blood Money’. If they haven’t gained at least a few fans from this performance, then they should just give up and go home.

Whilst you wouldn’t be mistaken for believing that the eighties glam metal scene had been laid to rest a long time ago, only to be resurrected by your drunk uncle at a family wedding. Via the likes of television show Glee or a few Spinal Tap wannabes, it may be time for you to think again.

Ever since their first major appearance on British shores at Download Festival back in 2005, Trivium have been received praise and accolades of triumph in their UK fanbase. Catapulting them into a world stage, the band now have a total of five albums under their belts seven years later. Before heading into the studio to begin work on album number six, the band have returned to our land for one final headline run.

With their UK return of the Warped Tour in London next month, you would think that Vans have enough on their plate in terms of providing shows to the UK for the year. Still, they shove in an awesome line-up for their ever so popular Vans “Off The Wall” tour which, if anything, is a warm up to the main course at Alexandra Palace in November.

The sometimes opinion polarising label Rise Records have been known to have their own ‘Rise Tour’ come across to the UK the past few years, exporting over to us some of their up-and-coming talent hosted on their roster. This time around, they have Of Mice & Men leading the charge along with some label mates, to see how they all fair on British shores.
