Rating:

The year was 1987, in the backstreets of Glasgow, when one of the most diverse and authentic rock bands was conceived, rebuilding the shape of rock ‘n’ roll in the Scottish highlands with their anthemic and hard rocking sound. That band was Gun, and 25 years later they’re back with a more thrilling and exciting album to date, ‘Breaking The Silence’, showing that these five men are nothing but a force to be reckoned with… musically.

Rating:

This won’t be a review in the traditional sense. Instead, I’m highlighting an example of a dying breed of music. I’ll start with the basics: the name. Upon researching, Karybdis is the Swedish spelling and pronunciation of the Greek mythological monster, Charybdis. The reason for using the Swedish version is beyond me, seeing as the 5-piece hail from London. Maybe it’s a nod towards the Swedish death metal scene, possibly even with a sense of irony, but I highly doubt it. Secondly, the album title is chronically generic for a modern metal band.

Rating:

At first glance, Landscapes have the risk of falling into the ‘another band with a single word name playing melodic hardcore that sounds like everything else’ category. Thankfully, this couldn’t further from the truth. It’s been a while since Landscapes have released anything, their EP ‘Reminiscence’ was released in 2010. But, it would appear they’ve spent their time wisely and have really created something special with ‘Life Gone Wrong’.

Release Date: July 2nd, 2012
Label: Alcopop! Records
Website: None available
Facebook: www.facebook.com/doctrinesband
Twitter: www.twitter.com/doctrines1

Rating:

Doctrines, hailing from the land of Manchester, are certainly turning heads with their debut four track EP ‘ZE’ with its 17 minutes of electric raucous… racket. Opening track ‘Climbing Yggdrasil (Everybody Loves Ray Kay)’ delivers a flavour of video game inspired twangs from the guitar that could well be the next theme music to Super Mario, and a robust outburst of yells that sound a little melodramatic. There doesn’t seem to be anything that oozes amazedness in this track, with the scratchy, shouty vocals that seem near impossible to tell if the person producing them is actually human or an estranged mythical cat/duck that wondered into the recording studio.

Rating:

Ant and Dec, Cheryl Cole, Sting; Newcastle has had some pretty big personalities come out of it. By far the most underrated is Ginger though, the absolute king of feel good pick-me-up anthems and frontman of the mercurial The Wildhearts. His life story is chocked full of ups and downs, but he still manages to do absolutely no wrong in a recording studio. Without a doubt one of the records of the year is ’100%’, and you’d be a fool to not listen to it.

Release Date: June 26th, 2012
Label: Roadrunner Records

Facebook: www.facebook.com/tdwp
Twitter: www.twitter.com/tdwpband

Rating:

With their furious ‘Zombie’ EP and last year’s ‘Dead Throne’, The Devil Wears Prada were given a somewhat new lease of life, with their recent focus and undeniably more mature direction seeing a new legion of fans that could finally begin to take the band seriously. With this, their live performance also seemed to take a marked leap forward, with some ferocious support slots for Bring Me The Horizon and some headlining dates seeing their reputation soar. Which, unfortunately, makes it all the more a pity that ‘Dead & Alive’ fails to catch the band at their best.

Release Date: June 26th, 2012
Label: Warner Bros. Records
Website: www.linkinpark.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/linkinpark
Twitter: www.twitter.com/linkinpark

Rating:

‘Living Things’ is the sixth studio album to come from rock giants Linkin Park, and when talking of the new album to Billboard, Mike Shinoda stated “It was a goal to only use the important sounds. Anything that wasn’t playing a role in a song we got rid of” and the band have maybe taken this thought a little too seriously. This album seems more bare-bones than stripped down, the twelve tracks clock in at just over half an hour, with a number of tracks under ninety seconds and nothing even approaching the four minute mark. The clean cut production and great ideas seem overshadowed by a feeling of unfinished work which will leave you craving for more.

Label: Roadrunner Records
Website: www.gojira-music.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/gojiramusic
Twitter: www.twitter.com/gojiramusic

Rating:

Gojira have historically been a very exciting band. 2003′s ‘From Mars To Sirius’ is a crushingly heavy album and its follow-up ‘The Way Of All Flesh’ is equally as pummeling. Pushing the boat out has never been one of Gojira‘s fortes though, and maybe their fifth offering ‘L’enfant Sauvage’ is one step too far in unoriginality.

Rating:

With 2011′s stunning ‘The Hollow’, Texas qunitet Memphis May Fire produced a textbook example of how tuneful, chorus fuelled metalcore can still pack a serious punch, even years after the formula had seemingly lost its bite. Barely a year hence, we could be forgiven for thinking that the band would struggle to generate the same buoyancy of last year’s release, which makes ‘Challenger’ an all the more surprising triumph.

Rating:

Pop-punk pioneers The Offspring proudly present us with album number nine, ‘Days Go By’. Having been around for about 28 years now, some people may think that they’re somewhat overstaying their welcome and that it may be time for them to retire. Well, those people are wrong, plain and simple. Just because they’re a little long in the tooth doesn’t mean that they can’t write great songs, right?

Cards on the table, I love pop-punk. I think it’s brilliant that even people who aren’t necessarily big fans of pop-punk artists can’t help but tap their feet to the rhythm when they hear the infectious choruses and upbeat nature of the tracks. However, recently it seems that any group of people that can play instruments can churn out something just catchy enough to fall into this category, leaving a lot of people tired of hearing the same chords played across four minutes.

Rating:

With copious amounts of double-bass pedallin’ that more than out rains this year’s summer storms, Basingstoke’s Blood Of The Spectre have laid down a technically mesmerising début that shows off some mighty impressive chops from all those involved. The guitars are blistering, as are the drums which push the EP along with tenacity. Yet, for all the individual prowess, the domineering sound of blast beats and a sense of ‘shredding for sake of shredding’ threatens to drag this release into the pit of countless metalcore acts that doing the rounds today.
