Following the release of last year’s sophomore full-length ‘Let’s Cheers To This’, post-hardcore outfit Sleeping With Sirens have almost quite literally sky rocketed up the popularity ladder. Bringing with them near anthemic choruses that can loop around your head for days after, all with a little rough edge from time-to-time, it was this combined with frontman Kellin Quinn‘s impressive vocal range that helped to create their success.

Rating:

Florida based quartet Broadway have followed up their debut ‘Kingdoms’ with their latest offering, ‘Gentlemen’s Brawl’. It;s a record that’s difficult to place into any one genre and it is this variety that makes the band so compelling to listen to and keeps the record in the listener’s memory. The word ‘brawl’ in the title is a nice touch, considering how tremendously fitting it is for the riotous 40 minutes that unfolds.

Northern Ireland is home to a number of rocks finest musicians; Van Morrison, Thin Lizzy, The Undertones and, of course, the more recently added to the scene, The Answer. But there’s another talented musician lurking within the mists of the beautiful land of Belfast, and he goes under the name of Duke Special, or otherwise known by his formal name, Peter Wilson.

Rating:

“I swear we’ll be unstoppable” is what Welsh frontman Benj promises in opening track ‘The New Kings Of This Town’ and it’s undeniable that the five piece pop-punk band have their future firmly in the palm of their hands. ‘Everything You’re Not’ is an album that paints an optimistic picture for the outfit from South Wales; it’s punchy, catchy and completely radio friendly. So, it’s not completely original, no, but that doesn’t mean that the band don’t have the talent to deserve all their glory.

Rating:

After undergoing a number of changes since their last release, The Chapman Family have released their new EP ‘Cruel Brittania’, with only two of their original members remaining. The EP’s central idea revolves around the English way of living, echoing a political but melodic sound through the new five songs. Even the song titles call out the British culture, not to mention the EP’s title.

Bedfordshire seems to be hiding a factory churning out up and coming rock bands, with In Remission the latest one to hit the radar. Their second release, entitled ‘The Great & Shallow’ showcases six tracks from the band. In Remission take influence from bands such as Underoath, A Day To Remember and Lostprophets, all of which play a small part in how the band sound at present.

‘At Heart’ feels like an album brimming with anger and animosity towards the world. It’s also an extremely personal record coming straight from the heart of frontman Levi Benton, which makes it a captivating and gratifying listen.

Ever since Enter Shikari exploded onto the metal and hardcore scene during the early 2000s, metal and electro have shared a tricky existence together. Some bands fuse the two in the perfect romance of bone-shattering beatdowns and electronica so catchy, fans don’t know whether to start swinging fists or glow sticks. On the other hand, there are some bands who have failed at genre splicing big time and ended up making metal infused with the sorts of noises R2D2 makes when he has an orgasm.

Rating:

I was more than pleased to find out that pop-punk favourites Motion City Soundtrack have returned to the music scene with their fifth album offering, ‘Go’. It’s an album that sees the band take a far mellower approach than they have on previous records (not too dissimilar to the one Jimmy Eat World took with ‘Invented’). Unfortunately, this new favouring of pop over the punk aspects of their sound is on the whole underwhelming and causes the album to fall a little flat. This could be a move that may disappoint some fans.

Old-timers amongst the punk rock scene, The Bouncing Souls have a lifespan of 23 years. ‘Comet’ is their latest release since their 20th anniversary collection of EPs, ‘Ghosts On The Boardwalk’; however, is this an attempt at reviving their (albeit slightly slowed down) punk spirit, or are they simply flogging a dead horse?

Rating:

The label ‘stoner rock’ may form a pigeonhole stacked with parcels of droning riffs, sludge coated tones and monotony, or it might throw up ideas of some right down-and-dirty rock ‘n’ roll. Whichever side of the dime that you’re on, Portsmouth 4-piece Tricorn dance across the divide with this, their début full-length. Smokey licks and Black Sabbath-influenced goodies are dragged down by some sluggish songwriting in parts, but there’s an undeniable groove that saves this heavyweight of a listen from becoming a burden.
