Rating:

We Caught The Castle are a female fronted pop-punk/rock band. Now, wait. It’s very easy to make the obvious comparisons and say this set up has been done to death. However, there does seem to be a slight gap in the market. It’s a tough gap to fill, but it’s one that this Reading-based five-piece are going for. They have clean female vocals as a main focus, but rough male screams underneath as contrast (yes, I know Paramore tried this out on ‘My Heart’, but they also didn’t stick with it and now two albums on and with the Farro brothers are gone I can’t see it coming back).

Rating:

Some bands are handed a break on a plate and given things easy, but some bands have to work their arses off and travel around for very little in return. Fortunately, Kent based five-piece Where’s Billy? fall into the latter category: they certainly haven’t been sitting around waiting for someone to find them. They’ve toured a lot and even twice in the USA, impressive for a band who haven’t even had a full-length album before. Their latest offering comes in the form of six track long ‘Forcibly Fed’, a blend of rock and punk-pop sounds reminiscent in sound of giants such as Biffy Clyro and Funeral For A Friend.

Rating:

Australian 5-piece Dead City Ruins have been hard at work creating their debut album, ‘Midnight Killer’. Although they met and formed in London, the band decided to return to Melbourne to gain some focus and inspiration for their album. Doing some background research, I was blown away the sheer diligence and persistence of this band. Not only is this debut album self-funded (through their own label), but it was funded by doing a fuck load of touring and “playing as many shows and flea pits as humanly possible”.

Release Date: July 23rd, 2012
Label: Roadrunner Records

Facebook: www.facebook.com/slipknot
Twitter: www.twitter.com/slipknot

Rating:

There are a very few modern metal bands that hold with their career a history and reputation as grand, chaotic, tragic and as exciting as Iowa’s Slipknot. Since their beginnings as one of the forerunners of the now practically dead nu-metal scene running right through to their now festival headlining days, their ‘maggot’ following is one of the strongest any band could ever hope for, and each record has documented a new chapter in the band’s life, maintaining their well known face whilst keeping things new.

Rating:

We Like Humans are small pre-toothed babies in the music industry, with a mere five months since formation. In this time span, most bands will have decided a name and possibly a sound, never mind have written and recorded a four track EP. They describe their sound as “tunes with no bullshit”, which is a pretty accurate description of the Preston lads’ sound.

Rating:

The ‘Roads’ EP is release number two for these Welsh rockers. This three track EP is being offered to you lovely people for free and you can get a hold of it here. Isn’t that nice of them? I actually reviewed their first release a while back and although gave them credit for their energy and charm, I criticised them for their lack of diversity between songs and the scene they were trying to break into.

Rating:

There’s a general feeling at the moment that metalcore has become stagnant, with too many bands sounding the same and conforming to the trends that are popular at the time. Some bands are working hard to break free from that tag, but unfortunately that cannot be said about For The Fallen Dreams.

Rating:

‘Yellow & Green’, the double-disc offering from Georgia four-piece, Baroness, is so much more than your run-of-the-mill album. Steering away from the heavier sound that dominates previous outings, it’s easier on the ear but has no less intensity or power. Tracks like the driving ‘Take My Bones Away’ will get heads banging; the more relaxed ones, like ‘Mtns. (The Crown & Anchor)’, will get you thinking in ways that straight-up rock bands, quite simply, won’t.

Rating:

Although they’re from North Carolina in the US, A Hero A Fake sound rather Australian. Maybe it’s the Parkway Drive influence shining through, or maybe it’s because vocalist Justin Brown sounds like he might just be racing kangaroos for a living. Either way, ‘The Future Again’ is a solid release that any band in the metalcore scene would be happy to release.

Release Date: July 16th, 2012
Label: Holy Roar Records / Topshelf Records
Website: None available
Facebook: www.facebook.com/runwalk
Twitter: www.twitter.com/runwalk

Rating:

As Camden-dwelling, Ray Ban-donning, roll up-smoking hipsters parade around in vintage American sports team shirts and unbearably tight jeans listening to noise-pop, it would seem the genre and therefore all those contributing to it may have somewhat of a stigma attached to them. With acts such as Sleigh Bells (whom I happen to adore) becoming chronically “cool”, it would perhaps seem hard to take other artists such as run, WALK! seriously. However, I beg of you to ignore the so-called “scene” and take them for what they are. Which is truly incredible, I might add.

Rating:

“The world is fucked and this is the soundtrack to its demise” – it’s hard to argue with Milwaukee’s Enabler and their apocalyptic new album, ‘All Hail The Void’. The four-piece metal/hardcore act have cut a record that’s relentless, firing skull-crushing riffs out of all cylinders. From the haunting build-up of opener ‘F.A.T.H.’ until the handbrake-ending of ‘Funeral Dirge’, this is an album rarely drops below full-speed and is a punisher of a listen.

Rating:

Two years ago, Pierce The Veil released their second album ‘Selfish Machines’, which pushed them into the post-hardcore scene with many critics labelling them under the ‘emo’ category. The band have now come back fighting with their new album ‘Collide With The Sky’ which well and truly shows that emo is in fact back; not the dodgy eye covering blackened fringes or the self harming nature, merely the powerful emotional sound that mixes hardcore with melody.
