‘Money Men’ is the follow-up to Kick Up The Fire‘s 2010 self-titled EP, and since then it appears that a few changes have been made. ‘Loaded’ opens up the EP with a nice use of subtle guitar effects and complimenting melodies, though at times it seems a little thinned out. The vocals also seem a bit empty compared to their first EP, losing any kind of post-hardcore/rock feel they had going before. I feel this is a shame as they run the risk of turning into ‘just another indie band’. The track moves along at some pace, but with no real changes it becomes slightly predictable. It’s a pleasant listen, but that’s as far as it goes.

Rating:

There’s something about the simplicity of somebody singing with a quiet instrumental background that I can’t help but love, be it a country duo like The Civil Wars or the pop/rock inclination of Kate Voegele. Newbie Portia Conn fits nicely into this style of music, made all the more impressive by her being only 19 years of age. The smooth vocal performance across her debut EP ‘Runaway’ shows that at a young age, Portia Conn already has a substantial amount of talent which can only grow as her career develops.

Rating:

I Am Freddie Mays make a return with their super heavyweight EP, ‘A Record Of Violence’ and it’s exactly what it says on the tin. ‘Snake In The Grass’ jumps straight into the carnage with a short, fast intro track. There are definitely no frills here: angry, dirty and straight to the point, it’s the first of many punches thrown by IAFM that makes you realise you should be paying more attention. If you weren’t listening before, you definitely are now.

Every now and then, you happen across a real hidden gem that takes your fancy. For 2012, that gem is the self-titled EP by Australia’s Islands. It’s the audial equivalent of going to pick up a cute little baby and then finding out that he’s heavy as fuck. The order of the day here is downtuned guitars and sludgy, dragging rhythms. At 48 minutes, it’s enough to be a full-length by other bands’ standards, and it certainly gives the more established bands of the genre like Intronaut and Neurosis a run for their money.

Rating:

The newest EP from Dutch pop-punkers Dowzer, is used to showcase their mid-90s influence pop-punk and also to showcase new members Bart Van Overveld (guitar/vocals) and Erik Aanradd (drums). The band, completed by existing members Deny Putman (vocals/guitar) and Sandra Heeren (vocals/bass), have already released two previous albums, however, this latest EP doesn’t push the band much further.

Rating:

Two-piece bands are all the rage these days. DZ Deathrays and The Bots are just two names that have impressed our panel of critics throughout the last few months, but Cherry Bloom are a band to top all others with their raucous punky beats, grumbling guitars and catchy riffs. Hailing all the way from Paris, the past six or so years have been all about this moment, when the new album ‘Open & Die’ hits UK shores.

Rating:

There’s one thing which is blatantly obvious about the heavy music scene at current: it’s hugely over populated. For the first time in a long age, you can find such an array of heavier music. With a small click, you’re given thousands of choices. The unfortunate thing is it breeds mediocrity, and every band within the scene have more to prove than they might have ten years ago. Bury The Hatchet have come up with a five track EP which, although without obvious fault, isn’t quite groundbreaking.

Rating:

We Caught The Castle are a female fronted pop-punk/rock band. Now, wait. It’s very easy to make the obvious comparisons and say this set up has been done to death. However, there does seem to be a slight gap in the market. It’s a tough gap to fill, but it’s one that this Reading-based five-piece are going for. They have clean female vocals as a main focus, but rough male screams underneath as contrast (yes, I know Paramore tried this out on ‘My Heart’, but they also didn’t stick with it and now two albums on and with the Farro brothers are gone I can’t see it coming back).

Rating:

Some bands are handed a break on a plate and given things easy, but some bands have to work their arses off and travel around for very little in return. Fortunately, Kent based five-piece Where’s Billy? fall into the latter category: they certainly haven’t been sitting around waiting for someone to find them. They’ve toured a lot and even twice in the USA, impressive for a band who haven’t even had a full-length album before. Their latest offering comes in the form of six track long ‘Forcibly Fed’, a blend of rock and punk-pop sounds reminiscent in sound of giants such as Biffy Clyro and Funeral For A Friend.

Rating:

Australian 5-piece Dead City Ruins have been hard at work creating their debut album, ‘Midnight Killer’. Although they met and formed in London, the band decided to return to Melbourne to gain some focus and inspiration for their album. Doing some background research, I was blown away the sheer diligence and persistence of this band. Not only is this debut album self-funded (through their own label), but it was funded by doing a fuck load of touring and “playing as many shows and flea pits as humanly possible”.

Rating:

There are a very few modern metal bands that hold with their career a history and reputation as grand, chaotic, tragic and as exciting as Iowa’s Slipknot. Since their beginnings as one of the forerunners of the now practically dead nu-metal scene running right through to their now festival headlining days, their ‘maggot’ following is one of the strongest any band could ever hope for, and each record has documented a new chapter in the band’s life, maintaining their well known face whilst keeping things new.

Rating:

We Like Humans are small pre-toothed babies in the music industry, with a mere five months since formation. In this time span, most bands will have decided a name and possibly a sound, never mind have written and recorded a four track EP. They describe their sound as “tunes with no bullshit”, which is a pretty accurate description of the Preston lads’ sound.
