Over the course of the last 6 months or so, My Chemical Romance have been sporadically releasing installments of ‘Conventional Weapons’, the tracks that were originally canned in favour of their last studio album, ‘Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys’. The first thing that comes to mind is, why?

There has been a trend lately where prominent band members try their hand at some solo work, often with great success. Champions of this movement include former Alexisonfire guitarist/vocalist Dallas Green under the moniker City & Colour, and ex-Million Dead frontman, Frank Turner. Both of these artists has received increasing amounts of attention due to their solo work and hoping to follow in their footsteps is I Am The Avalanche/The Movielife frontman, Vinnie Caruana, with his debut EP, ‘City By The Sea’.

At risk of stating the obvious, titling an album ‘Anthems’ is nothing less than a statement of intent. It defines the content in a literal sense, big, bold, exciting, as well as the unitary, accessible meaning behind the group presenting it, Pure Love. Having had the guts to title a debut release in such a manner, Pure Love saw their record delayed into early 2013; needless to say, expectations are high. Have Carroll and Carter completed the butterfly-like transformation from scuzzy punks to rock gods, or have they buckled under the pressure of a new sound, new recognition and a new audience?

We Were Beautiful have released their debut effort, ‘This Town’, a truly exceptional first EP from the Merseyside rockers and that clearly depicts how infectious they are. Easily something that will push their career into light.

There are few outfits in recent memory which have generated such a rabid fevour so early in their career as Crossfaith. Blending the rather traditional Japanese trend of twisting the forumla somewhat with the entirely invogue, the band’s electronic heavy metalcore has seen them quickly cultivate a live reputation of impressive reverence, shows with the similarly exciting While She Sleeps and a blistering set at 2012′s Hit The Deck Festival firmly cementing their place as feverishly watched up-and-comers. Their ‘Zion’ EP does much to explain the band’s dramatic onstage success.

The path is finally clear and Heaven’s Basement are making it on their own. Here is ‘Filthy Empire’; the band’s debut full-length and a real statement of intent. After years of being the support for the likes of Bon Jovi and Papa Roach, they are finally able to stand on their own feet. Their string of ups and downs throughout the years has seen original members depart but to be replaced by what we know now, as Heaven’s Basement.

The past 11 years have proved The Bronx to be a band unable to tie down. Although they’re well known for being a hardcore punk band, they have ventured into territory that bands of that style are unlikely to. Perhaps the contrast between The Bronx and their side-project, Mariachi El Bronx, is what makes them stand out. Beneath the Mariachi attire is a band who know exactly where they’re going and what they want.

A comeback which many thought was impossible has changed tables. Welsh post-hardcore outfit Funeral For A Friend are back and with their new release, ‘Conduit’, we see a shift back towards the band’s earlier style, clearly ignoring everything that was ‘Tales Don’t Tell Themselves’ and pushing the elements of heavier and darker music.

Norweigan metalcore troop Dyst put out their debut full-length record, ‘Judges And Butchers’, late last year to both worthy and extremely critical reviews. But, it wasn’t until early 2013 that we Brits would see an official release on our shores.

Every now and then, a band releases an album that you know means something. That sure as shit is the case with Birmigham’s Odessa and their debut full-length effort, ‘Carry The Weight’. It’s an album that they’ve been threatening to make ever since their inception in 2010, and one that will hopefully send them hurtling into music libraries nationwide.

Northpaw are a 5-piece from the South of Britain, making music along the lines of Architects, While She Sleeps and early We Are The Ocean. Yeah, it’s really as boring as that. There’s little on ‘Trepidations’ that doesn’t sound like it hasn’t been sourced from elsewhere.
