Maker are a five piece high energy pop-punk band from Springfield, Massachusetts. Their newest album, ‘Mirrors’ is a combination of crushing hardcore inspired riffs, blast beat punk drumming and heartfelt lyrics belted forth with desperate force. You can draw some similarities between Maker and some of the other big time pop-punk players like Set Your Goals and Four Year Strong.

Laudably raising money for a fantastic cause, Wrongpop have compiled a satisfyingly rich and diverse release in their funding raising efforts, showcasing not only the exciting talent florishing in the UK’s up and comers but also a commendable willingness of these bands to turn their craft to the backing of a profoundly worthy benefactor.

Country soul music isn’t necessarily a sound that you would expect from a band coming out of Bristol, but Phantom Limb have nailed the sound completely, creating a distinctive Americana style-vibe that would sound at home in the Southern states of the USA.

With hardcore in such rude health in the UK, and indeed elsewhere, the ability to stand out becomes more and more difficult as fantastic bands seem to crop up everyday with their own individual twist on the meat and potatoes sound. Whether it’s the cerebral melodicisms of Heights, the recent pop-punk spin that Your Demise have undertaken or even the black metal leanings of Kvelertak, it’s easy to forget that, when done right, a straight up approach can be equally as effective. Wolves prove to be a fantastic example of this.

Die Antwoord are a bunch who’ve mastered the art of online self-promotion to get noticed. The chances are that you first happened to stumble upon the band when you were scouring the net at witching hour looking for some form of entertainment. Porn didn’t quite cut it, so you turned to the time-wasting websites to eat away at the hours. Die Antwoord‘s reputation has stemmed from a bunch of videos that went viral at the tail end of 2009, and since then, the band’s popularity has grown to a pretty frightening level when you consider that they’ve only released one album prior to this (which received very mixed reviews) and that when you actually listen to their stuff, it doesn’t take long to realise that a lot of people need their ears cleaned, or at least need to get off the bandwagon. Because, quite simply, Die Antwoord are a band taking the space and time off another who could be so much better.

Anyone familiar with Circa Survive or early Saosin material will know just how unique Anthony Green‘s voice is and this, his latest solo jaunt, sees him embark on a full-length album of beautiful sounds about his recent life happenings. Falling in love, getting married, having a child, and no longer being dependent on mental health medication, which have altered and added a new dimension to his musical, and songwriting ability, as this truly is a treat for the ears of anyone who gets involved.

The first part of Earth‘s most recent venture was last year’s ‘Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light I’, and now we’ve just been introduced to the second. Over a 45 minute period, you’ll go from being stressed out and agitated to feeling relaxed and at ease. ‘…Demons Of Light II’ just has that effect.

Melodic rock band Seversyn, from the Isle of Man, are very new to the scene. However, debut effort ‘Five Dollar Shake’ does not by any means portray that point. Right from opener ‘They Say You’re Out To Get Me’, it’s clear to see that this isn’t just another rubbish debut release from a band who are too eager to do things right.

Descension: six guys from Wishaw/Carluke, who class themselves as “Cool as fuck, time travelling, blunt smoking, gangsta fuckers” and who have one member listed as a “Dancer/Party Animal” doesn’t instantly shape up in the mind as the stereotypical death metal band. However, as soon as intro ‘Djomt’ kicks in, you know exactly the direction that this EP is heading in.

Sometimes it’s better to go into an album with no expectations. The Evil Dead are a band that are about as easy to place as they are to find on Google. With a name like this, they could only be from South America, a region where heavy metal is basically a religion and the likes of Iron Maiden and Metallica are hailed as gods. With a clear passion for their trade, The Evil Dead play heavy metal like it never went out of fashion (wait… was it ever in fashion?).

Following on from the popularity of previous release, the ‘Give Up’ EP, London based hardcore outfit Last Witness have released their second LP; ‘Mourning After’. Despite being named by some as a ‘hype band’ for their merchandise being seen all over the UK hardcore scene, Last Witness have stepped up and delivered an extremely powerful album here.

New Jersey sextet Palisades‘ debut EP, ‘I’m Not Dying Today’, is a five-track affair that with every listen you can feel the band wrapping you around their fingers, making you give into their mercy. It’s no surprise that their influences are a combination of post-hardcore and pop-punk as their music perfectly mirrors this, with strong catchy choruses mixed in with aggressive heart wrenching screaming then combined with a good old modern day breakdown. These guys are onto a winner here, and with every track the band give you a big nudge to carry on listening.
