Pedalling a very fashionable brand of melodic post-hardcore, it certainly doesn’t take long to place Manchester based quintet From Embers. Whilst the obligatory soaring choruses and crunching breakdowns abound, the band do occasionally display brief glimpses of variation on their debut self-titled EP, which may prove to see them stand out from the ever massing hopefuls.

The disappointing ratings and viewings at the box office for Tenacious D‘s ‘The Pick Of Destiny’ cinema outing has been well documented, though the sales and chart positions for its accompanying soundtrack album were a complete polar opposite, debuting at #8 in the Billboard 200. Clearly, the music fanbase is far more supportive and loving of Jack Black and Kyle Gass‘ work than film nuts, and though knocked back the duo have emerged from the ashes six years on with their new album, ‘Rize Of The Fenix’. That’s right, The D are back.

Smashing poseurs, killing janglecore and defending cybergrind; Pariso have released their first full-length record, ‘Nothing Beyond, Everything After’, and in 29 minutes of music they crush the rest of the UK music scene into submission. Welcoming regular vocalist Mario Gambardella back into the band after his time travelling abroad, normal service is resumed for Parsio. Dissonant riffs and thundering drums densely layer together behind the coarse vocals spouted from the darkest recesses of Mazz‘s being to create a hellish sound.

Despite the huge success brought to Brighton’s Architects with their 2011 full-length ‘The Here And Now’, the album most certainly polarised opinions within their fanbase, critised by the elitists as being far too commercial and radio rock. If you look at the album properly though, it wasn’t really that mainstream. It held some rather heavy hitters, just listen to ‘Day In Day Out’, ‘The Blues’ and ‘Delete, Rewind’. Still, with new effort ‘Daybreaker’, the band stated they’d be returning to their roots, not feeling comfortable being a band who had tracks that comfortably slotted into daytime radio.

When you ask people what they know about the city of Chester, an upsetting amount will bring up Hollyoaks. This is doubly upsetting for us folk who were born and raised in this walled city. Our music contribution was hardly top notch either, boasting that Lee from Steps who went to college here. This looks set to change though, as Above The Underground enter with their latest EP, ‘Autumns’. This pop-punk four-piece have created a release packed with catchy hooks and huge choruses that will keep fans of the genre eager for more.

After their debut release ‘This Polar Noise’ was set loose last year, Guildford hardcore mob POLAR. have only gone from strength to strength, supporting Young Guns on a largely sold out UK tour as well as travelling to Europe with south coast melodic specialists Heart In Hand. It’s safe to say that the band’s debut full-length, ‘Iron Lungs’, is an eagerly anticipated by the majority of hardcore fans dapping around this year and trust me when I say, it fucking delivers.

Firstly, I’d like to point out that I won’t be using words like ‘dark’, ‘evil’ or ‘raw’. I’d really like to, but that would be far too obvious. What I will say is this: From the outset this record is unsettling, opening to screeching feedback which remains a constant theme throughout, returning to haunt you again and again.

Over the past few years, notorious musician Marilyn Manson and what he once was appeared to have died. Once a man known for his controversial live performances and albums which would be both adored by his loyal fanbase and critically viewed by the media and concerned parents had become a thing of the past. His music had lost its fire in all aspects, resulting in 2007′s ‘Eat Me, Drink Me’ and 2009′s ‘The High End Of Low’ being his worst work to date which were mere shadows compared to any previous offering throughout his career.

Rocky Loves Emily are clearly a band that has matured since their 2010 EP, ‘American Dream’. With ‘Secrets Don’t Make Friends’ comes their second release on Tooth & Nail Records, and what comes with it is an eclectic and distinctive collection of songs which really hold up against the homogenized pop-punk backdrop there seems to be at present.

The now 5-piece band The Tower & The Fool from Providence, Rhode Island have released their first album via Run For Cover Records after adding two more members to their roster. Initially, the band began with the song writing duo Alex Correia and Chris Rosenquest, but they soon decided to bring in one member after the other to strengthen and broaden their sound for the better. The output of the band’s hard work and line-up change is evident in debut album, ‘How Long’, an effort which provides a mixture of pop-punky vocals with melodic guitars and indie beats.

Comparisons to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds can be fantastic for a band, but they can also be compromising. Tom Williams & The Boat will appeal to fans of the new folk-rock movement which has thrived in the UK in the last few years. Acts like Laura Marling and Mumford & Sons have become the stalwarts of the genre and ‘Teenage Blood’ will hit a chord with anyone who follows this particular scene.

Cancer Bats are back with album number four, ‘Dead Set On Living’. Frontman Liam Cormier claims that this album is more “upbeat” compared to 2010′s ‘Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones’, stating that “Lyrically [on 'Bears...'] it was far too dark for what the band wanted to do”. As much as I identified with the general vibe of ‘Bears…’ I have to agree, it was mighty dark. He went on to explain that with ‘Bears…’, they tried to capture the gnarly and ferocious elements of Cancer Bats live, and although they did somewhat, there were still some elements missing. ‘Dead Set On Living’ is take #2 on taming the out of control, vicious beast that is Cancer Bats.
