ALBUMS OF 2010: Marianne Harris’ top 15!

Photographer Marianne Harris shoots bands on an almost daily basis, whether that be for promo shoots or during some live shows. With this in mind she’s always open to new music as it comes, so we thought we’d find out what has been rocking her 2010, so here’s her list of her 15 favourite albums of the year. She couldn’t quite decide which one deserves which position though, so here they are in alphabetical order of the artist/band name instead:

A Day To Remember – What Separates Me From You

Release Date: November 16th, 2010
Label: Victory Records
Website: www.adtr.com
MySpace: www.myspace.com/adaytoremember

Our Rating:

Marianne’s reasons:
Hugely anticipated album, it’s not ‘Homesick’ but it’s pretty good all the same. I like that there’s a variety of sounds in this album, jumping from hardcore vibes to melodic rockin’ tunes. They’re trying to sound more commercial, which is sometimes a bit disconcerting, but the songs are cracking catchy bastard offerings and it shouts ADTR from start to finish. Gotta be a fave.

Our Rating:

Marianne’s reasons:
I only discovered this band a few months ago, but they’re wicked and I totally love this EP. It’s been on constant rotation in my car stereo during some very long journeys, and I haven’t got fed up with hearing it yet! Give it a go yourselves.

Bring Me The Horizon – There Is A Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is A Heaven, Let’s Keep It A Secret.

Release Date: October 4th, 2010
Label: Visible Noise
Website: www.bringmethehorizon.co.uk
MySpace: www.myspace.com/bmth

Our Rating:

Marianne’s reasons:
Probably the biggest surprise for me this year. I didn’t expect to love this quite as much as I do, and if I wasn’t playing it safe with the whole alphabetical listing I’d probably put it at the top of my list. There are so many bits in this album that I like: the songs are huge, the production is impressive to say the least, you can actually hear what Oli is screaming, and it’s even got violins. Flying the flag for British metalcore, and putting it back in the ‘popular’ box. I highly approve!

Burn The Fleet – Burn The Fleet

Release Date: April 5th, 2010
Label: Walnut Tree Records
Website: None available
MySpace: www.myspace.com/burnthefleet

Our Rating:
Unforunately wasn’t covered by DEAD PRESS!.

Marianne’s reasons:
An awesome rock band from Southampton who truly deserve some recognition, and this EP is just simply incredible. You can expect much bigger things and much more word on these by this time next year, trust me on this one guys. They’re rock solid.

As we didn’t cover this release, there is no DEAD PRESS! review of this record to be read.

Bury Tomorrow – Portraits

Release Date: May 5th, 2010
Label: Artery/Basick
Website: None available
MySpace: www.myspace.com/burytomorrowband

Our Rating:

Marianne’s reasons:
Kind of a cheat entry as ‘Portraits’ was released at the end of last year in the UK, but the US version has 3 new tracks and was released this year so I’m including it. One of my favourite UK bands live, and this album is so damn good. I remember how excited I was when they sent me the new tracks they added. Every song is punchy, Dani‘s screaming is so fulfilling, and Jason‘s voice is one of the best in the UK in my opinion. Winner!

Deftones – Diamond Eyes

Release Date: May 4th, 2010
Label: Warner Bros. Records
Website: www.deftones.com
MySpace: www.myspace.com/deftones

Our Rating:

Marianne’s reasons:
My second favourite album by Deftones, and in my eyes beaten only by their famous album ‘White Pony’. It’s definitely the best thing that they’ve written for years, and is proof that these boys are far from down and out yet.

Devil Sold His Soul – Blessed & Cursed

Release Date: July 12th, 2010
Label: Century Media
Website: www.devilsoldhissoul.com
MySpace: www.myspace.com/devilsoldhissoul

Our Rating:

Marianne’s reasons:
When I first got this I couldn’t stop listening to it. Devil Sold His Soul have been one of my favourite UK bands for a very long time, and I thought they’d have to pull out a lot of stops to top ‘A Fragile Hope’. Turns out that they definitely did. ‘Blessed & Cursed’ is gutsier, bigger and has “epic as fuck” written all over it.

Emarosa – Emarosa

Release Date: June 29th, 2010
Label: Rise Records
Website: None available
MySpace: www.myspace.com/emarosa

Our Rating:

Marianne’s reasons:
Only just got this, but listened to it a lot and it’s going straight into my top 15 albums of the year, simply because Jonny Craig has one of the most mesmerising voices I’ve ever heard. If you’re yet to hear this guy sing then you’ve been missing out.

The Ghost Inside – Returners

MySpace: www.myspace.com/theghostinside

Our Rating:

Marianne’s reasons:
I saw The Ghost Inside at a festival in Sweden earlier this year and they totally blew me away. Soon after I grabbed this album and I’ve been hooked on it ever since then. If you’re into melodic hardcore, then definitely get your hands on this album as soon as you can!

Lower Than Atlantis – Far Q

Release Date: March 29th, 2010
Label: A Wolf At Your Door Records
Website: None available
MySpace: www.myspace.com/lowerthanatlantis

Our Rating:

Marianne’s reasons:
I really do need to get with it, because I’ve only had this album for a month or so. Everyone raved about it for months and months after it came out, but it still took me ages to catch up. It’s good though, I love Mike‘s lyrics and the raw honesty of this album.

Proceed – Curious Electric

Release Date: May 31st, 2010
Label: Proceed Records/MudHut
Website: www.proceed-online.com
MySpace: www.myspace.com/proceed

Our Rating:

Marianne’s reasons:
Earlier this year, Proceed changed their sound a bit deciding to cut out the screaming elements. I admit I was a little dubious about this to start with, and it took me a while to get used to it and embrace it, but this EP is outstanding, and Dan Lancaster sounds like an angel. That alone is reason enough to put this into my top choice.

Marianne’s reasons:
Another US band that I saw for the first time this year, hugely impressive and their albums are all great. ‘The Honest Hearts’ is a wicked EP from start to finish. Make sure you catch them next time they come over to the UK, I promise you will not be disappointed.

Label: Small Town Records
Website: None available
MySpace: www.myspace.com/whileshesleeps

Our Rating:

Marianne’s reasons:
Stunning debut from Sheffield boys While She Sleeps. Since seeing them at Ghostfest in the summer, I’ve been a massive fan and listened to this for months solidly. Not only is this solid, but they put on a superb live show too. Surely one of the current British underground must see bands.

Yashin – Put Your Hands Where I Can See Them

Release Date: February 1st, 2010
Label: Unsigned
Website: None available
MySpace: www.myspace.com/theyashin

Our Rating:

Marianne’s reasons:
There are lots of reasons why this album is in the list of my top CDs of 2010: big happy choruses, catchy melodies, and they managed to cover a Britney Spears song well, and make it their own.
