Even alongside the likes of their filth encrusted brethren Trap Them and Black Breath, there’s little denying that the hellish extremity that Nails mercilessly thrust down our lug ‘oles has become the last word in 21st century brutality. Emerging from California’s shadowy underbelly in 2009, the trio’s career thus far has been typified by a staunch commitment to aural violence, culminating in the eye-popping sadism of their third full-length ‘You Will Never Be One Of Us’, where the band’s head-down primitivism and jaw-clamping ferocity meet in the most thrilling and deadly metallic onslaught in recent memory.
With tracks coming in routinely under the sixty second mark, the contents of ‘YWNBOOU’ are somewhat akin to being plunged into a real-life ‘Texas Chainsaw’ scenario. Veering between grindcore intensity and the more feral end of the hardcore spectrum, the likes of ‘In Pain’ and ‘Savage Intolerance’ are sickening cuts of unfiltered, unrestrained fury, and as Nails casually toss these brief bursts of claustrophobic horror our way, it’s easy to wonder how such a bile-drenched ear mauling can deliver such a rush of adrenalised joy.
Leaving us a bloodied and broken pulp with the torturous, slo-mo wretch that is eight-minute closer ‘They Come Crawling Back’, Nails bow out having left no stone unturned in their crusade to make the most thoroughly fucking unpleasant music conceivable. A foam-at-the-mouth, nail bomb detonating, tectonically heavy beast of a record, ‘You Will Never Be One Of Us’ kills.
