Andrew W.K. has been partying hard for as long as he’s been in the public domain. 2001’s ‘I Get Wet’ put him onto a pedestal for party addicts everywhere, and he retains that iconic status to this day, even though arguably he’s never released anything relatively decent since. With his first release since 2009, he carries on the same formula he’s had forever, although now he’s a self-help expert, apparently.

Opening with the rather aptly titled ‘The Power Of Partying’, the aforementioned formula is surprisingly stripped away, and it sounds awful. The track is like a fanfare and national anthem for a country where Andrew W.K. is king and partying is the law. As fun as that all seems, the track sounds like an outdated attempt to bring the 80s back. Think of a really bad Europe song, and then some.

Following that is 12 tracks of pure Andrew W.K. slotted alongside a few self-help spoken word tracks chucked in for good measure. Basically, if you’ve heard one track off the record then you’ve heard them all.

‘Ever Again’ would have to be contender for the standout of the record. It’s a raucous track with a huge sing along during the chorus. Lyrically it’s juvenile, and melodically it’s bland and predictable. ‘Music Is Worth Living For’ is another number with big sing along moments, and that’s about it.

Unfortunately, ‘You’re Not Alone’ is straight out of Andrew W.K.‘s how to manual, and that manual is at least 15 years out of date. The album is too long, too repetitive, and too boring while also managing to be self-indulgent, over produced, and completely over the top. There’s no doubting that it’s a fun record that will transpire very well live, and it makes me want to go to an Andrew W.K. show as soon as possible, but would I listen to it again? Absolutely not.
