TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2011: DEAD PRESS!

What a year 2011 has been for music for us here at DP! HQ. Acts have fallen, others have risen and some bands have overcame some of the most difficult obstacles of their career to produce what my be their best albums to date. Though it has been an awfully difficult challenge to pick our top 10 highlights from this year in terms of releases, we’ve managed to refine it down to these ones below. These 10 albums are the ones that have been rocking our socks off the most all year long, and if you haven’t done so yet we strongly urge you to get a copy of these RIGHT NOW!

10.) Trash Talk – Awake

Release Date: October 11th, 2011
Label: Hassle Records
Website: www.trashtalkhc.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/trashtalk
Twitter: www.twitter.com/trash_talk

Our Rating:

Known widely for their uncontrollable and unpredictable live shows, most notably through onstage madman Lee Spielman, hardcore veterans Trash Talk released an EP this year that truly showcased their lively and explosive nature on record unlike ever before. Clocking in at just under 10 minutes in total, ‘Awake’ is a 5-track rush of fast-paced hardcore punk at its most aggressive. If you’re yet to see these guys in action live, add that onto your ‘things to do before I die’ list right now.

09.) City & Colour – Little Hell

Release Date: June 7th, 2011
Label: Dine Alone/Vagrant Records
Website: www.cityandcolour.ca
Facebook: www.facebook.com/cityandcolour
Twitter: www.twitter.com/cityandcolour

Our Rating:

The split of Alexisonfire announced earlier this year shocked and upset the band’s fans the world over, but with Dallas Green‘s solo project City And Colour now being his main focus, albums like this year’s ‘Little Hell’ are going to come to fruition all the more often. With tracks like the beautiful ‘Fragile Bird’ composing this record, we can only wait to see what he brings to the table next now there’s no other musical outlets for distraction.

08.) Mastodon – The Hunter

Release Date: September 26th, 2011
Label: Roadrunner Records
Website: www.mastodonrocks.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/mastodon
Twitter: www.twitter.com/mastodonmusic

Our Rating:

Riffs, riffs and more riffs – that’s what Mastodon are well known for, and ‘The Hunter’ doesn’t fail to deliver the goods once again. As one of the most eagerly awaited releases within the metal community this year, the metal outfit had a quite a weight to carry on their shoulders, but tracks like ‘Curl Of The Burl’ and ‘Creature Lives’ prove once more that Mastodon are one of the brightest talents in metal today.

07.) Don Broco – Big Fat Smile

Release Date: February 14th, 2011
Label: Unsigned
Website: None available
Facebook: www.facebook.com/donbroco
Twitter: www.twitter.com/donbroco

Our Rating:

Bedford may not be reknowned for its rock scene, but if Don Broco‘s debut EP ‘Big Fat Smile’ is anything to go by then that may all change in the foreseeable future. Despite only showcasing the band’s talents in a few tracks, ‘Do What We Do’ and the BBC Radio 1 creeper of a single ‘Beautiful Morning’ are just two offerings from this release which are both catchy and drenched in potential. No doubt when their full-length finally drops, Don Broco will be several steps closer to a household name.

06.) La Dispute – Wildlife

Release Date: October 4th, 2011
Label: No Sleep Records
Website: www.ladispute.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/ladispute

Our Rating:

La Dispute are well-known for their spoken word styles and intensity in their material, especially through the seemingly uncontrollable switch of speech to scream with frontman Jordan Dreyer. Latest full-length ‘Wildlife’ maintains and builds on that trademark sound of the band, and one quick listen of tracks like ‘King Park’ and ‘A Letter’ displays a band whose salt is worth far more than is noted to be. They’re heading over to the UK early next year too. What better time to get your teeth sunk into the band.

05.) Twin Atlantic – Free

Release Date: May 2nd, 2011
Label: Red Bull Records
Website: www.twinatlantic.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/twinatlantic
Twitter: www.twitter.com/twinatlantic

Our Rating:

Scotland is know for its mountains, haggis and the Loch Ness monster. Though Biffy Clyro may be carrying the title of the country’s biggest rock band of this generation, Twin Atlantic are catching up to them real fast, and their new album ‘Free’ only reaffirms that statement. Single releases ‘Make A Beast Of Myself’ and the record’s title-track even managed to get itself onto BBC Radio 1′s rotated playlist, and really helped to set them up for what will undoubtedly be a big future for the boys.

04.) Manchester Orchestra – Simple Math

Release Date: May 10th, 2011
Label: Columbia Records
Website: www.manchesterorchestra.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/manchesterorchestra
Twitter: www.twitter.com/manchesterorch

Our Rating:

Don’t let the name deceive you, these guys aren’t an orchestra, nor are they from Manchester. They are however the creators of one of the strongest alternative rock albums of the year, ‘Simple Math’. Manchester Orchestra have added to their catalogue yet another awesome album that carries a simple yet brilliant concept from frontman Andy Hull, questioning many of lifes mysteries from relgion to sex, all topics of which are encased in several beautiful tracks.

03.) Touché Amoré – Parting The Sea Between Brightness And Me

Release Date: June 7th, 2011
Label: Deathwish Records
Website: www.toucheamore.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/toucheamore
Twitter: www.twitter.com/toucheamore

Our Rating:

One of the forerunners of self-proclaimed “The Wave” bands, Touché Amoré had a pretty tough mark to hit to top their debut, ‘…To The Beat Of A Dead Horse’. Thankfully they managed it, and in doing so have released one of the best albums of their genre. Vocalist Jeremy Bolm still maintains his emotive and raw voice from start to beginning, and the instrumentally hollow ‘Condolences’ is almost spine-chilling. Not bad for an album that was recorded and produced in just five days.

02.) Lower Than Atlantis – World Record

Release Date: April 25th, 2011
Label: A Wolf At Your Door Records
Website: www.lowerthanatlantis.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/lowerthanatlantis
Twitter: www.twitter.com/ltamusic

Our Rating:

Last year’s ‘Far Q’ was the set-up for Lower Than Atlantis‘ transition to a more mainstream rock sound than was found on their hardcore laced debut, ‘Bretton’. With this year’s full-length ‘World Record’, the Watford-based outfit had refined it down to a tee, and what we’re left with is a brilliant alt rock/pop-punk album consisting of song after song of catchy, bouncy and easy to enjoy rock. Though some of their hardcore fans of the past may remain there, those able to accept the change or latch on to their new style are embarking on a journey with the band that will see a great future for them.

01.) Letlive. – Fake History

Release Date: April 12th, 2011
Label: Epitaph
Website: None available
Facebook: www.facebook.com/theletlive
Twitter: www.twitter.com/thisisletlive

Our Rating:

Though technically released last year, it wasn’t until Epitaph picked up on Letlive. and their potential that it was released over in the UK the way both the label and the band felt it should have been. As described by the band themselves in an interview we had with them earlier this year, their previous two albums were “the idea of Letlive.“, but new album ‘Fake History’ “is Letlive.“. The hype built from the release was relentless too, with festival slots at Download and Leeds festivals, tours with Enter Shikari and Your Demise along with a few headline runs in the UK of their own and more.

Despite how great ‘Fake History’ is as a record, you cannot experience its full potential until you’ve seen the band perform from it live. Frontman Jason Aalon Butler is a sight to behold in his on right once in his onstage trance, and was even dubbed the #1 frontman in rock today by Kerrang! Magazine.

With our spot as the best album released in 2011, we fully believe and support in Letlive. and the great reception they’re receiving the world over. Go out to a show, buy the album and/or merch, support the band and get in there sooner rather than later.
