INTERVIEW: Divide (12/02/2018)
February 25th, 2018
There are a lot of promising up-and-coming bands that are coming out of Scotland right now, and alternative rock five-piece Divide are certainly one of them. They’ve been drumming up a lot of hype for themselves, having supported fellow Glaswegians Vukovi, getting airplay on Scuzz and BBC Radio 1, and releasing their debut EP ‘Embers’ in November last year. Not bad at all for an unsigned band.
Whilst on a headline run across the UK to support the EP, we caught up with the band backstage at the London date of the tour to see how they came together, if they’re working on a follow-up to ‘Embers’ yet, and just how it’s all generally going for them.
DP!: Hey guys! How’s the tour going?
Scott (drums): It’s going great! We’re on day five.
Nicole (vocals): I keep forgetting what day we’re on.
David (guitars): It does feel like we’ve been on tour for about 8 weeks.
Nicole: The shows have been so good.
David: Nottingham was one of the best. It was in Rock City which is a nightclub, and we’ve never played there before.
Nicole: That one was really good because a lot of our friends were there, and that’s always nice to have your friends there showing support.
Connor (guitars): It has been really great. Some of the shows have been wild. Steven partied a bit too hard one night and we found him in the bathroom hugging the toilet.
Steven (bass): I don’t even remember…
DP!: Sounds… fun! So how did you guys all get together to form Divide?
Nicole: Steven and Scott were in a band called Secret Betrayal together. Me and David used to be in Armstrong, and Connor was in Yashin.
David: We’ve all been in different bands in Glasgow.
Scott: And we’d all played shows together as well.
Steven: I’m the new one. I joined last.
DP!: How would you describe your sound?
Connor: Nothing like Paramore!
Scott: As far away from Paramore as possible!
[everyone laughs ]
David: It’s just melodic, alternative rock really.
Steven: Edgy rock!
Nicole: Have you ever heard of Vitas? (Russian singer whose song 7th Element has become an internet meme)
[whole band starts singing 7th Element ]
Nicole: They’re an influence on us.
[everyone laughs ]
DP!: So, aside from Vitas, what bands are you guys listening to currently?
Nicole: Hands Like Houses.
David: All Ears Avow.
Connor: Everything heavy.
Scott: Ha. Yeah. Slayer.
Connor: Yeah. But I cannot stand Metallica. Cannot. Stand. Them.
Nicole: I listen to a lot of blues and jazz, actually. I’m heavily influenced by Billie Holiday. We have pretty eclectic taste, we love all different types of music. We’ve been listening to a lot of Scooter in the van on this tour too!
DP!: What’s been your favourite moment being in Divide so far?
Nicole: My favourite moment was when we were at the Unsigned Music Awards last year, and David went into the toilet with a white shirt on and came out with it black because he’d spilt Jäger down him.
David: We flew down especially for that, and made a day of it, and then just got really drunk and can’t remember exactly what happened.
Nicole: Playing Teddy Rocks Festival was amazing too, on the Vocalzone stage. The Vocalzone people are all so nice.
Scott: You know what was actually really cool? Escape The Fate came down to see our show in Nottingham this tour. They’d been playing round the corner, and we went down to see them, and then they came to see us.
Steven: Honestly, my favourite part has just been joining the band, because I’ve not been in it long!
Nicole: We’re really happy to have him in the band.
DP!: So your EP ‘Embers’ came out in November last year, can we expect any new music from you guys this year?
Scott: We’re going to be releasing a single for definite.
David: We are playing a new song tonight, actually.
Steven: But, we don’t know if that will be the new single yet because we’ve written a couple of songs.
Nicole: We haven’t decided yet. I’m saying yes, but they’re not sure, haha!
DP!: Anything else you’re looking forward to in 2018?
David: I really want to work on our sound and get writing some more music.
Steven: Hopefully get some good support slots, and just go out and play as many shows as we can.
Connor: Yes, I want to do some support tours. I’m sick of headlining!
The band’s debut EP, ‘Embers’, is out now through.
