EP: Anavae – Are You Dreaming?
October 27th, 2017
Pushing the expansiveness of an electronic alternative rock hybrid, Anavae are back with another EP that toes the line between the over-the-top artsy bits of Thirty Seconds To Mars and the reverberating tones of PVRIS.
‘Are You Dreaming?’ is 20 minutes of atmospheric and rhythmic adventures into an unknown abyss that lacks direction and purpose at times, but lingers in the mind for longer than expected.
The EP opens with an industrial styled builder that has a slow tempo, but has attitude and a deep guitar tone for one of the more rockier situations for the London duo; Rebecca Need-Menear sounds superb on the verses of what is comfortably the best song on the release.
The main issue with ‘Are You Dreaming?’ is that the rest of it sounds very similar, but removes the best elements. The industrial tone is removed in ‘Are We Alone?’, and replaced with what can only be described as a Caribbean steel drum ringtone that doesn’t suit the ‘That’s The Spirit’ era Bring Me The Horizon production, and sounds ridiculous when they’re layered together.
The verses that Anavae have compiled for this EP are interesting, gripping, and full of promise and excitement. However, it’s the choruses that let the EP down. ‘Lose Your Love’ creates a beautifully creepy aesthetic that the awful chorus kills in seconds. The running theme throughout ‘Are You Dreaming?’ is a massive downfall on all the tracks, and the only one that kind of gets away with it is ‘Stay’ but the chorus is essentially just ‘Rolling In The Deep’ by Adele.
Anavae have plenty of work to do to perfect their song structure and consistency before they attempt a full album, but if they can carry on their verse style into catchy hooks then they’ll be looking at a following the size of PVRIS.
