EP: The Young Hearts – Honestly, I’m Just Thinking
September 29th, 2017
Newcomers The Young Hearts only have one EP to their name, which makes it all the more surprising at the scale of their current fanbase in the UK. The Kent quartet may have only ben together for a few years, but they’ve amassed a dedicated fan base and have started to make real rumbles.
With the release of ‘Everything We Left Behind’ at the tail-end of 2015, the band have moved away from their slightly gritty sound for something more polished on their new offering, ‘Honestly, I’m Just Thinking’.
With a 4-track EP, it’s very important to have a gripping opener, to draw you in and make you want to listen further, and that’s exactly what we have with ‘Bloom’. It begins with melodic guitars reminiscent of a less mainstream Deaf Havana from their early days. Throughout the track, lead singer Craig Lawrence draws on his ability to write truly emotional and endearing lyrics that are completely relatable, such as “We were seventeen / We had everything”. If you compile this alongside a track that keeps building to an almost euphoric ending and creates an emotive atmosphere throughout, it’s not a bad opener at all.
‘Smoke’ must have been quite clearly the obvious choice for the lead single. It’s an upbeat song which has mainstream appeal written all over it. Think McFly meets Mayday Parade, and you’re not too far off the sound that these guys have. Infectious and emotive, it’s the perfect blend for a lead single.
The remaining two tracks on the EP are worthy of a listen, but nowhere near the two songs mentioned. It’s actually pretty difficult to pinpoint any other moments on the EP that are noteworthy. It peaks at its opener, and never returns to those heights from that point onwards. That doesn’t mean that ‘Honestly, I’m Just Thinking’ is a disappointment. Far from it actually. This is another stepping stone in the right direction for the quartet, and it’s sure to amass them more fans that will be eager for more.
