BANDS THAT INSPIRE: Huxtable

Scottish alt rock act Huxtable are about to drop their new EP ‘Change Shape Future’ along with a launch show in Glasgow and a UK tour. The two piece refer to themselves as “riff-rock” and have the fuzzy melodies of Death From Above and Pulled Apart By Horses. For a better introduction, we got the two guys to pick the records that inspired them and made them into the band they are today.

LED ZEPPELIN – NO QUARTER

As chosen by Broono

This was the first song I heard from Led Zeppelin, I was about 18 and had just really begun drumming. I wasn’t sure at first about the eerie intro but when Bonham’s syncopated snare drum kicks in, I instantly couldn’t stop listening to this song. That’s what’s wonderful about this song and I guess Bonham, he doesn’t need to play from the beginning but for the song.

TRAVIS – LUV

As chosen by Broono

This song is one of the saddest songs I’ve ever listened to. It’s an older Travis song from ‘The Man Who’ it’s about not really meaning to fall in love and how such a strong love can fall apart, at which time I was going through a heavy break up. This song was basically chronicalling how I had felt through the relationship and after, in turn helping me understand heart break that little bit more.

BLINK 182 – THE ROCK SHOW

As chosen by Broono

I’m 17, I’d had a rough time at school and basically not hanging out with any friends for a whole year until one dude (who is still a really close friend) introduced me to this song, introduced me to a group of friends, introduced me to partying. Also skating, rock shows and girls. This song makes me happy, it was a turning point in my life for the better and it’s a catchy classic, absolute banger.

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE – YOU THINK I AIN’T WORTH A DOLLAR, BUT I FEEL LIKE A MILLIONAIRE

As chosen by Jordan

The thundering drums at the beginning get my attention – then it just builds up til it kicks you right in the face. This song has been a staple listen for me at least once a week since I was about 15. No joke. It gets the blood pumping!

BUDDY HOLLY & THE CRICKETS – THAT’LL BE THE DAY

As chosen by Jordan

This song is actually the reason I picked up a guitar. I was listening to a cassette I found in a box- one side was Billy Connolly stand up (that at 10 years old I probably shouldn’t have been listening to, but i wasn’t interested in the swearing, I just found it hilarious how he said the word “Jobby”) I remember turning it over once side A was done- fully expecting more comedy – but it was a mix tape of old rock n roll! Starting with That’ll be the day. It inspired me to want to make music. And lets be fair – it’s still a fucking banger.
