ALBUM: Eskimo Callboy – The Scene
September 11th, 2017
Germany’s resident electronicore party band Eskimo Callboy are back with ‘The Scene’, their anticipated follow-up to their 2015 offering, ‘Crystals’. For the longest time, the band gave the impression that they were self aware that they were the band that willingly and intentionally wrote songs with terrible lyrics, and, admittedly, this is what helped them to grow and expand their following.
There are moments on ‘The Scene’ – well, one at least – where you’ll find yourself thinking, “Did they actually write that?”, and that lies in the track ‘MC Thunder’. It’s bad, but not in the self-aware, intentional and ironic way, but just bland bad. It’s a song that has a narrative of someone finding a Cadillac, taking and driving it, and singing about maybe not giving it back… seriously.
However, in saying that, there are songs such as ‘VIP’ that break the typical Eskimo Callboy mould, but in saying that, it’s a straight up metalcore song about, as you’ll have probably guessed, a perspective of someone living the life of a VIP. It’s far from ground-breaking, but it’s a fun listen regardless.
Like previous record ‘Crystals’, features are a notable aspect of ‘The Scene’. The biggest this time around comes from Chris Fronzak of Attila who features on the title-track.
‘Frances’ has the lyrics of a pop song, but is much more meaningful, talking about being someone’s “shooting star”, which is kinda cute. The track also features German singer/songwriter Frances Baerecke, which gives it a drastic feel at times, and a track like this is something that would get on top 40 radio, and not in a bad way either.
With ‘The Scene’, Eskimo Callboy have written what feels like their best material to date, save for a few silly moments, but all-in-all it shows off much more maturity, and, despite this being a change in approach, it really suits them. Avoiding the absolute car crash of ‘MC Thunder’, the record is a blast to listen to from start-to-finish.
