BANDS THAT INSPIRE: The Young Hearts

Kent rockers The Young Hearts arrived with their debut EP ‘Everything We Left Behind’ that covered heartbreak and disappointment through relaxed and mindful melodies. The band are now preparing for the release of their follow-up EP ‘Honestly, I’m Just Thinking’ that toes the exciting line between emo and alternative rock but don’t listen to us – we got each member of the band to pick just one song that inspired them into the band they are today.

BRAND NEW – JESUS CHRIST

As chosen by Stew Thorpe

For me, Brand New put so much passion, intensity and craftsmanship into every song, that it leaves me wanting to better myself creatively. They push boundaries and reinvent themselves with each album, regardless of consequence, and that alone is inspiring. A song like ‘Jesus Christ’ for instance, gives me a sense of overwhelming joy and sadness, all at the same time, something very few artists are able to achieve.

MILLION DEAD – I AM THE PARTY

As chosen by Andrew Pepin

The ‘A Song to Ruin’ album by Million Dead was one of the earliest albums I can remember, that really opened up a new appreciation in music for me. The pure, raw energy and emotion of the first track I listened to, ‘I Am the Party’, is what I crave to experience again when discovering new music.

THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM – MEET ME BY THE RIVERS EDGE

As chosen by Craig Lawrence

When ‘The 59 Sound’ came out, my whole perspective of music changed. They have everything; the hooks, the anthems, the blue collar swagger, but most importantly they have the heart and soul. Gaslight were the first band that made me realise that the words are the most important part of any great song; that you don’t have to be the most technical band, or the catchiest band, you just have to say the right thing and mean it.

THE DANGEROUS SUMMER – WHERE I WANT TO BE

As chosen by Aaron Jackson

These guys encapsulate everything I love in a band. On my first listen of ‘Reach For The Sun’ I lost my shit big time and was lucky enough to see them when I was touring on a day off. It was insane especially when they played their lead single ‘Where I Want To Be’. They use the ambience of delays and reverbs with punchy drums and a sea of passionate and heartfelt vocals which is everything I love in a band. I cannot wait for there new album.

JIMMY EAT WORLD – WORK

As chosen by The Young Hearts

For more than two decades, Jimmy Eat World have been one of the most consistent bands to grace the music scene, putting out album after album of heartfelt, catchy pop rock tunes. They may not have invented “emo” but they are the ones who made sure it was here to stay. Any band should be inspired by a group that has always put great songwriting before everything else.

The Young Hearts‘ new EP ‘Honestly, I’m Just Thinking’ is out September 29th via Primordial Records and available to pre-order (here). You can follow the band via their Facebook (here) and Twitter (here).
