BANDS THAT INSPIRE: Monster Truck

We last saw Canadian blues juggernauts Monster Truck hitting arenas with Nickelback but now they’re back with their own headline tour, playing shows throughout Europe and the UK with The Picturebooks. We caught up with singer and bassist Jon Harvey to find out which songs have inspired the band and turned them into what they are today.

SPACE TRUCKIN’ – DEEP PURPLE

People typically bring up Deep Purple when they talk about our band. It’s probably the organ. When we started ‘Fireball’ and ‘Machine Head’ were in heavy rotation amongst our friends and it seemed natural to attempt to capture something similar.

TESTIFY – RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE

Everyone my age was influenced by Rage Against The Machine. They were the heaviest thing in popular music at the time and that timeless groove mixed with those lyrics were truly something special.

DRAGONAUT – SLEEP

I remember the first time I heard this song I thought it was a Black Sabbath b-side. Huge riffs, steady groove, I just love it.

MISSISSIPPI QUEEN – MOUNTAIN

We have a song called ‘Sweet Mountain River’ that we wrote to sound like Leslie West’s Mountain because it was about a mountain. And a river.

REMEMBER – FREE

We used to live together when the band started for a year. Usually on Saturday (sometimes Tuesday) we would wake up and have a big family breakfast. We’d listen to records and relax. This song reminds me of those days when we began.
