Hailing from London, TheCityIsOurs are ‘…quickly building a reputation as one of the most energetic and passionate bands of their kind, crafting their own brand of Melodic Hardcore…’ – at least according to their website. However, what exactly is their brand of melodic hardcore and what can we expect from them?

The opening title track starts with a soft, melancholic piano sequence, interrupted by a violent scream. In the following three minutes we hear impressive screaming combined with pure clean vocals, vigorous drumming and some interesting guitar work. ‘Dry Your Eyes’ kicks off with a fast hardcore riff and the screamed refrain ‘what makes you think that you are something special?’, which would be an excellent start, but sadly builds up only to a mild, flat chorus that does not really meet with expectations.

‘Haunted’, however, shows some more consistent songwriting and is made to be stuck in your head, with the spoken word part a nice addition to the EP as a whole. However, ‘Lungs’ is where we really get to see band’s potential – there are no disappointing moments, the build-up ends in a huge chorus and all the instruments add to each other, achieving harmony and creating a huge track. ‘The Life In You’ does not achieve the same level of great songwriting as ‘Lungs’, however, yet it also has the band displaying their souls and provides another catchy chorus.

The lyrics are completely comprehensible, the vocals are more diverse than one usually expects from bands of this genre and the drums are great. However, this record could do with a bit more advanced guitar work and a bit less repetition. Sure, one can repeat the same riffs over and over and get away with it, but this band just seems capable of better. It is also not entirely clear which direction the band wants to go, and for now it seems like they are putting together different elements of different genres, which sometimes works in their favor, yet sometimes results in those elements not coming together too well and creating a disjointed soundscape rather than adding to each other.

As a result, ‘Wildfire’ sounds like the creation of a relatively new band that is still searching for their sound. Yet since TheCityIsOurs have been around only since 2015 and are still of tender years, this is not a bad debut. If they figure out who they want to be and how they want to sound, they might just have a bright future.
