BANDS THAT INSPIRE: Chapter And Verse

Chapter And Verse[webres]

East London newcomers Chapter And Verse may just be starting out but their fresh sound on debut EP ‘The Wolves Back Home’ has earned them rave reviews across the music industry, and are selling out shows already. We grabbed the alt-rockers and quizzed them on their 5 top inspirational records, why they mean so much to them and how they’ve shaped ‘Chapter And Verse’ into the band they are today.

BRAND NEW – THE DEVIL AND GOD ARE RAGING INSIDE ME

Darren (Guitar) once said that this album got into his blood stream and that he’s never going to be able to get rid of it. The funny thing is that we ALL had the same kind of feeling with this album but just didn’t know how to articulate it.
If there’s one word I could use for this album, it’d be ‘nuanced’. It’s SO detailed and well thought out. It seems like there’s always something new to find in this mesh of sonic beauty.
Inventive, heart-wrenchingly poetic, full of endless dynamics.

CIRCA SURVIVE – BLUE SKY NOISE

If someone were to say that I’m only able to listen to one album for the rest of my life, I’d probably choose this.
It has everything you could want from an album, all performed as if it were an easy feat to create.
To me, it feels like each of the intensely talented band members has their own individual stamp on the record, which combined with some incredible production values makes it one of the best rock records of all time.
We finally saw them live a few years after discovering this album and I was SO nervous. It sounds crazy, but I have such an intense love of this record that I really didn’t want a bad live show to taint it. It’s happened countless times before and I kept thinking ‘Please not Circa…’.
Fortunately they sure as hell didn’t disappoint and I blew all my cash on merch to celebrate haha!

HE IS LEGEND – I AM HOLLYWOOD

Probably one of the most under-rated albums ever. This one is an endless source of inspiration for me as an artist.
I loved this band from the second I heard them and this one in particular is incredible from the first second to the gritty end.
The singing is intense, the screaming’s raw, the guitar work is bonkers and the drums are killer.
I think his lyricism is also majorly unique, if a bit mental. He found his own way of doing things that really works; I don’t think there’s lots of frontmen that have done that so early on in their careers.

PARAMORE – BRAND NEW EYES

Hooks, hooks, hooks and hooks. Totally unforgiving, endless hooks.
What makes this album incredible is how seamless everything is. Within the songs, you can just can’t imagine them being any other way. There’s never a point where you think “I’d have done that differently” or “Wish they’d have changed this part”.
Even though most of the songs are clich├ęd rock structures, it just doesn’t matter! It’s so expertly created that you could have it on repeat for hours and still want to start it all over again.

LETLIVE. – THE BLACKEST BEAUTIFUL

This one is a big one because it seems like the perfect example of a band maturing into their sonic peak.
Everything about this album is “fuck you”.
I think it’s very rare for a band to take a risk with their production and do something as drastic as letlive.
‘Fake History’ was bright, tinny and raw, whereas this is compressed and mid-heavy; it’s a whole different sound.
We all have total admiration for that boldness. This album was the return of a highly anticipated band; it could’ve been make-or-break and they reared their heads with middle fingers in the air and came back with something totally unexpected.
When ANY of the tracks come on in the car or wherever, somebody will shout ‘TUNE’. Guaranteed.
