INTERVIEW: Counterfeit (18/04/2016)

Counterfeit 2016

Emerging out of nowhere in 2015, Jamie Campbell Bower has lead Counterfeit into selling out venues all over Europe after releasing just their debut EP, ‘Come Get Some’. Their brand of care-free rock ‘n’ roll has been key in their rise to success in such a short time, and 2016 has the promise to rocket them into one of the UK’s top forces.

We caught up with the band about their upcoming dates, and the story behind their latest single, ‘Enough’.

DP!: You’ve got a big UK tour coming up, and sold out your debut show at the Islington Academy before even releasing a full-length record – how does it feel to be filling venues already?
Counterfeit: It’s been arousing. The uptuck has been adopted by many members (lol) of the band.

DP!: What have you got planned for these dates – why should people come out and see you?
C: Expect energy, loud noises and full fronted nudity (only 3 of the previous 3 statements are true). If you’re into punky, full blooded rock, then we think you might like what we have to offer. Even if you’re not, you should still check out our set because by the end of it, you might have changed your mind. Disclaimer: If you’re averse to auditory assault, it might not be your cup of tea.

DP!: Can we expect an album this year?
C: We’re close to finishing our first album, but we expect to have it done after we return from our June tour and festivals in July. We don’t have a definite timeline yet, but closer to the end of the year would be a good guess at a potential release date. When we know more about release dates you’ll be the first to know!

DP!: You’re going out to Europe after the UK dates, what kind of reaction are you expecting? How has the mainland continent responded to Counterfeit, so far?
C: Some of the places we’re going are completely new to us, so we don’t really know what to expect. On the other hand we’re returning to Germany and Italy who’ve been amazing in the support and energy they’ve given us. The more spirit the fans deliver at the gig, the more we echo back, a kind of symbiosis.

DP!: Your summer diary is starting to fill up with European shows and festivals? What’s it going to be like sharing a stage with bands like Billy Talent?
C: It’s going to be nerve-racking hard work. The people at these shows are coming to see artists who they know and have been around for years, we’ll need to bring more than our A game to keep up. These festivals will be the first ones we’ve ever played, and to support a band like Billy Talent is a dream come true for all of us, many of us have listened to them since they changed their name and released their song ‘Try Honesty’.

DP!: Your brand new single ‘Enough’ was recorded during the tragic events in Paris, how did this change your approach in writing the song?
C: It changed everything. The single was born midway through recording a completely different song, we were so outraged at the time that the recording process stopped for a few hours to talk about it as the reality sunk in. We felt we needed to speak out and address their morally corrupt ideologies, thus ‘Enough’ was conceptualised there and then. From then the recording process only took about 2 days before it was finished.

Counterfeit are currently on tour on the dates below and you can watch their brand new video for ‘Enough’ here.
