BANDS THAT INSPIRE: Bellevue Days
February 15th, 2016
So much goes into a band’s style, persona and sound – and they music they listen to can make a big impact into the creative direction they choose. Delving into the minds of the musicians you look up to can help understand how they’ve reached the position they are in now and why they’ve ended up there. We’re setting out to talk to your favourite bands about who inspires what they do and what goes into their music.
It’s difficult to find someone who isn’t raving about Bellevue Days at the moment and 2016 is starting to look like it’s going to be a big year for them – so Dead Press! got in touch with the Croydon four piece to find out which bands have inspired them to be the band they are today.
THE NATIONAL – DON’T SWALLOW THE CAP
I’ve been a fan of The National for a while now but have only really got into them for the past year, I love the way the songs are so effortlessly emotive and lyrically divine. One of my favorite songs has to be ‘Don’t Swallow the Cap’ as it has a line which captured me from the first time i heard it ‘When they ask me what do i see, I say a bright white beautiful heaven hanging over me’, it just gets me every time. All their songs are great and for a band who have done a fair few albums, they’re still improving in my eyes.
DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE – I WILL POSSESS YOUR HEART
I think Death Cab For Cutie have been really brave through the years with their style of songwriting, just so passionate and inventive. When ‘I Will Possess Your Heart’ first came out, it blew me away, the fact that they could get a away with a song of that length itself, still make it catchy and interesting I believe was a stroke of genius. Simple, hooky and effective.
JAMIE T – SHEILA
I’m a big fan of having meaning behind songs. And Jamie T has some killer words. Also the samples he puts in his songs are pretty arty and original. He makes music that he likes regardless of fashion/trends an all that. I can’t think of many artists too similar to him.
He seems pretty cool in the interviews I’ve seen too.
Check out one of his most famous tunes ‘Sheila’
ALLUSONDRUGS – SUNSET YELLOW
Yorkshire is a great music hub right now, loads of my favourite bands are from up there including these guys.
They have this great sound that just washes over you like nectar but at the same time really rocks. It’s hard to put into words but that sound has really inspired a lot of my pedal choices and my playing style.
Could say loads more but if you want a flavour, check out ‘Sunset Yellow’.
MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA – I CAN FEEL A HOT ONE
As a collective we decided that one of our main inspirations has to be Manchester Orchestra, they have inspired us all at some point. Andy Hull has such a sick voice and can make the heaviest stuff sound great and the more soft stuff sound beautiful, plus I (Alan) met him once and he gave me a great piece of advice. ‘I Can Feel A Hot One’ is up there as one of their greats for sure.
