EP: Despite My Deepest Fear – Selfish Generation
December 1st, 2015
With a familiar blend of big melodic bluster and thudding mechanical aggression, there is little from ‘Selfish Generation’ to surprise. Indeed, gripes of repetition certainly hold water between the depth charge breakdowns and arms aloft melodies, yet there is a certain rich depth of sound and slickly textured charm to what burgeoning Londoners Despite My Deepest Fear do, ruthlessly crafted hooks and crunching rhythmic clout winning the day.
Harnessing the explosive power of metalcore’s immortal blueprint, with an added dollop of post-hardcore sensibilities, the likes of ‘Stranded’ are all towering chorus refrains and state-of-the-art heaviness, which for the most part tells the entire story of ‘Selfish Generation’. ‘F.Y.F.’ balances sledgehammer grooves with infectious clean passages, and closer ‘Long Way Home’ is an anthemic as it gets here.
Perhaps an injection of ideas and a certain expansion of their sonic palette will serve them well on their debut full length. Yet, with six hugely enjoyable slabs of banging metallic gusto, this is a frequently thrilling snapshot of Despite My Deepest Fear‘s flowering potential.
