TRACK-BY-TRACK: Employed To Serve – Greyer Than You Remember

Few bands can make as much welcomed riotous noise as Woking’s Employed To Serve, delivered shot by shot across EP after EP. However, the outfit took it to a whole new level when they finally dropped their debut full-length, ‘Greyer Than You Remember’, constructing and executing some of the closest post-apocalyptic sounds you’re likely to hear. To get a bit more insight into the record and its creation, the troupe gave us a track-by-track overview of the release:

01.) LIVE WITHOUT
We needed a new intro for our set and Sammy brought this song to practice, and we liked it so much that we put it as the intro to our album.

02.) WATCHING FILMS TO FORGET I EXIST
James had a few riffs recorded on his iPad, and we worked through it to make it a full song in practice. This song represents the ‘screen generation’.

03.) GREYER THAN YOU REMEMBER
Sammy bought an octave pedal and really liked it… and then James really liked it too and he bought one. Before we had a title, we called it ‘messhug’

04.) THREADS
This song was written by Robbie. He came to practice with a lot of drum patterns and he made riff ideas with his mouth, which Sammy made into real riffs. Lyrically, it’s about people who are too reliant on others and feel like they don’t have a path in life of their own.

05.) NO ONE’S PERFECT THIS INCLUDES YOU
This song was written by Robbie messing around with high hat rhythms and everyone contributed to this, even Justine who communicated her riff idea with mouth noises because she can’t play guitar.

06.) BONES TO BREAK
This is our pop song. We needed a song that our parents could say “I kind of like this”. We also were watching lots of films that had great soundtracks at the time.

07.) TOWER MOUTH
A bunch of drum ideas that we added riffs to after. This is a song about people who like to think they know it all.

08.) BEG FOR RAIN
This song is about taking what you have for granted. James grew a moustache, and brought this song idea to practice.

09.) BURY YOURSELF DEEP
It’s about finding identity in your own sadness, and almost thriving in it. This was another song we wrote in a practice as a full band.

10.) COLD AS THE REST
We knew we needed something to end the album. At this point the octave pedals didn’t satisfy us, so we dropped the bottom string and played around with riff ideas.

‘Greyer Than You Remember’ is out now through Holy Roar Records. You can listen to it now via BandCamp (here) and Spotify, or you can purchase it via iTunes (here) or the label website (here).
