LIVE: Lights @ The Deaf Institute, Manchester (31/01/2015)

An awful lot can happen in the space of three years. For Canadian electro-pop vixen Lights, in the three years since she last came to Manchester, she married blessthefall frontman Beau Bokan, became a mother to their child Rocket Bokan, and released her third studio album, ‘Little Machines’. Now, with this wealth of knowledge and life experience under her belt, Lights has returned to the UK.
Opting for just the one support act on this run, Californian indie hip-hop starlet K.Flay (***) with her live drummer is here to get the sold out party at The Deaf Institute started. Her mash of hip-hop and electronics may not be an original one, but it certainly gets the crowd in the mood for the night ahead. K.Flay flips between rapping and somewhat melodic cleans here and there which, though at times muffled in the mix, run tightly alongside the rhythms and beats in the backdrop.
Taking to the stage with a full backing band, Lights (****) receives a long overdue welcome from the Mancunian crowd, the final date of her tour across the UK before heading to mainland Europe. Starting out proceedings with ‘Muscle Memory’, the low-intensity synth and her sugary sweet voice begins to bounce across the room and induces people to raise their arms and bounce along for the majority of her set going forward.
It’s not long before the crowd’s voices start to overpower Lights‘ voice, especially during the bubblegum pop sensation that is ‘Up We Go’, recent single ‘Running With The Boys’, and a little something for the older fans, ‘The Last Thing On Your Mind’. Admittedly, at several points during the evening the amount of reverb effect lacing her voice is a tad excessive, but when she brings the huge soaring power behind the likes of ‘Flux And Flow’, it’s clear that not only has she developed several aspects of her life over the past few years, but also her voice to all new heights.
Here’s hoping that we don’t need to wait another three years until Lights brings her electro-pop goodness to British shores again.
