EP: Ke$ha – Cannibal
January 31st, 2011
Known for possibly brushing her teeth with “a bottle of Jack”, 23-year-old Ke$ha quickly blew up with her debut single ‘Tik Tok’, and has managed to obtain the tag of a party animal with her choice of lyrics and general personality. Just over a year since the release of her debut full-length ‘Animal’, she’s back with EP or deluxe addition to the aforementioned album, ‘Cannibal’.
Not much has changed or altered from what you’d find across her previous single or remaining tracks on ‘Animal’, her lyrics are still generally terrible, simplistic and at times cringing, take note of “I just can’t date a dude with a vag” in ‘Grow A Pear’ and “beat so phat, gonna make me cum” in ‘Sleazy’. Her less serious efforts on this release, just like on her album, are examples of her worse work on offer, and sadly will probably become the ones most well-known. However, those who sift through the trash on offer will be rewarded with songs like ‘C U Next Tuesday’ and ‘The Harold Song’, who expose Ke$ha‘s more serious (and musically more enjoyable) side, aswell as displaying that the young songstress can actually sing with the auto-tune stripped off. Serious may not be the image she wants to display, but it works better with her.
Those after more electro-pop driven and upbeat numbers to party too, thankfully there are some pieces worth taking notice of. Opener ‘Cannibal’ sets a slightly darker yet synth lead feel, and would make for a great future single, possessing one of Ke$ha‘s catchiest chorus hooks to date of “I am cannibal”. ‘We R Who We R’ shows more of a serious side split into the electro-pop deliverance she prefers, showing she can handle a balance.
Sadly, ‘Cannibal’ is ultimately only worth half of its actual content worth taking some notice of, with the remaining half simply being unnecessary garbage carrying her often terrible lyrics. Still, it will probably go down well at most parties.
