When you hit play for ‘Disconnected’, track number one of ‘Nothing You Didn’t Deserve’, think of looking at a catapult far in the distance. Once you press that button, the catapult is released and you see something hurtling through the sky towards you, building momentum and gaining speed as it starts to plummet down to the very spot where you’re standing. Then boom, it hits you like a lead cow falling from 300 foot. The impact of Heartist is going to be huge and it all starts with this EP.

Take the likes of Sonic Syndicate or Dead By April only a tad more polished and you have Heartist. Simply put, nearly all aspects of their music sound great. Both soft and rough vocals are executed flawlessly by the mighty talented Bryce Beckley, whose powerful voice really comes into its own during some outstanding choruses. The guitars and synths work together seamlessly, like a well oiled machine. Despite being similar to other artists out there, Heartist inexplicably come across as being fresh and new and, potentially, the next big thing. I have no doubt they’ll be huge and I can also picture many a fan girl screaming their teeny tiny lungs out at their shows.

Perhaps a reason for them sounding similar to other artists is due to their breakdowns. Now, Heartist are a little late to the chuggington breakdown party and, by a little late I mean they have damn near missed it completely. What’s baffling is that these type of breakdowns just don’t fit in their songs at all. It’s like trying to fit a banana into a Smarties tube. Sadly, it’s this factor that diminishes the impact of their songs and it’s such a shame too. As soon as the dun-dun-dudududun kicks in, you just think “oh no, this again?”. Luckily though, a fantastic chorus will always soon follow and remind you that this band are actually really good.

As far as I’m concerned, Heartist are going to be an instant hit, especially if their superb sound transfers well into a live environment and I fail to see how it wouldn’t. The only flaws are the cliché breakdowns and, since they’re not a crucial element of their songs, they can be easily removed and/or improved upon for their follow-up. Take a listen to the breakdown free ‘Where Did I Go Wrong?’ to get an idea of their true potential and you’ll see what I mean.

‘Nothing You Didn’t Deserve’ is a solid attempt at a record and is even more impressive considering this is their first EP too. I can see big things for this band and I’m genuinely looking forward to hearing more material from them soon.
