DOWNLOAD 2013 PREVIEW: The Weird And The Wonderful

Welcome to part nine in a series of features previewing this year’s Download Festival. Each week, we shall be looking at a particular genre or scene that will be represented at the festival. You may have heard some of the more established bands, but these previews may introduce you to similar bands that are in the same vain.

In part nine, we’ll be previewing bands that play music off the trodden path.

RAMMSTEIN

Where?: Jim Marshall stage
When?: Sunday @ 9:15pm
Who do they clash with?: Limp Bizkit (Main), Satyricon (Pepsi Max), Glamour of the Kill / Sonic Boom Six (Red Bull)
Listen: Keine Lust (Live)

Fire, and lots of it. A cannon in the shape of a penis shooting confetti onto the crowd. Those are just two of the strange things that will happen during Rammstein‘s performance. The campness scale will be needling the red as the Germans blast through a back catalogue of bizarre tunes, like ‘Pussy’ and ‘Sonne’. There are very few places in public that grown men can get away with wearing BDSM outfits, but a Rammstein show is one. Remember to clench.

VOLBEAT

Where?: Zippo Encore stage
When?: Friday @ 6:00pm
Who do they clash with?: Korn (Main), Turisas (Pepsi Max), Blood Command (Red Bull), We Are the Ocean (Jagermeister)
Listen: Heaven Nor Hell (Live at Wacken 2012)

Elvis Presley never played metal, but if he did he would sound like Volbeat. The Danes one day decided that death metal wasn’t for them and started playing Elvis-inspired rock tunes with an added hint of heaviness. Always a great time live, Volbeat are worth trekking up the hill during Korn for at least a glance.

ENTER SHIKARI

Where?: Zippo Encore stage
When?: Saturday @ 7:35pm
Who do they clash with?: Queens Of The Stone Age (Main), Kvelertak (Pepsi Max), Lonely The Brave (Red Bull)
Listen: Juggernauts (Live)

Enter Shikari have been heralded over and over as one of the live bands you must see before you die, but they’re facing a difficult clash this year. Queens Of The Stone Age and Kvelertak will be bombarding them from both sides, but don’t be surprised if the Brits come out on top.

MODESTEP

Where?: Pepsi Max stage
When?: Sunday @ 8:05pm
Who do they clash with?: 30 Seconds To Mars (Main), A Day To Remember (Zippo), I AM I (Red Bull)
Listen: To The Stars (Live)
Why?: Modestep are the wildcard on this year’s festival, playing rock influenced dubstep. Hopefully they won’t get too many bottles thrown at them in true Donington fashion.

DEVIN TOWNSED

Where?: Jagermeister stage
When?: Saturday @ 6:00pm
Who do they clash with?: Motorhead (Main), Jimmy Eat World (Zippo), Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats (Pepsi Max), Press To Meco (Red Bull)
Listen: Bad Devil (Live)
Why?: The absolute king of showmanship, you would be seriously stupid to miss Devin Townsend. Whether it’s guitar battles with Ziltoid, the coffee drinking omnidimensional alien, fast-paced metal sections, uplifting singalong choruses, or even gospel, Devin really has something for everyone. Who knows what his set on the Jagermeister stage will be like.

KARNIVOOL

Where?: Zippo Encore stage
When?: Saturday @ 3:25pm
Who do they clash with?: Alice In Chains (Main), Empress (Pepsi Max), Sky Valley Mistress (Red Bull), Crowns (Jagermeister)
Listen: Set Fire To The Hive (Live)
Why?: The Aussie proggers play a mix of music that draws as much influence from Tool as it does Meshuggah.

DIR EN GREY

Where?: Zippo Encore stage
When?: Friday @ 1:50pm
Who do they clash with?: Architects (Main), Palm Reader (Pepsi Max), Free Fall (Red Bull)
Listen: Rasetsukoku (Live)
Why?: If you don’t like Japanese culture, you might be best advised to stay away from second stage when Dir En Grey are playing. It’s probably for the best. They’re rather worrying.

THE ALGORITHM

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Friday @ 7:50pm
Who do they clash with?: Bullet For My Valentine (Main), Gogol Bordello (Zippo), Converge (Pepsi Max)
Listen: Access Granted (Live)
Why?: Trippy electronics mixed with chunky metal, The Algorithm promise to both confuse and disarm.

HACKTIVIST

Where?: Pepsi Max stage
When?: Sunday @ 2:45pm
Who do they clash with?: Parkway Drive (Main), Masters Of Reality (Zippo), Buffalo Summer (Red Bull)
Listen: Hacktivist (Music Video)
Why?: One day, Hacktivist woke up and thought “yes, mixing djent and rap is a super idea”. Incredibly, the merger is really good, like peanut butter and jam.

SONIC BOOM SIX

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Sunday @ 9:55pm
Who do they clash with?: Rammstein (Main), Limp Bizkit (Zippo), Satyricon (Pepsi Max)
Listen: For The Kids Of The Multiculture (Live)
Why?: Sonic Boom Six face a very difficult task trying to coax fans away from 3 very different bands, but those who do watch them will be greeted with UK ska punk infused with hip-hop jigginess.

BLOOD COMMAND

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Friday @ 6:15pm
Who do they clash with?: Korn (Main), Volbeat (Zippo), Turisas (Pepsi Max), We Are The Ocean (Jagermeister)
Listen: High Five For Life (Music Video)
Why?: No, Blood Command are nothing like you think. They’re like if Paramore was composed by horned demons.

ASTROID BOYS

Where?: Red Bull stage
When?: Saturday @ 1:10pm
Who do they clash with?: Black Star Riders (Main), Nekrogoblikon (Pepsi Max), The Killing Floor (Jagermeister)
Listen: Minging (Music Video)
Why?: Grime at Download? It’s been done before. Last time however, Lethal Bizzle was met with a barrage of 1,000,000 bottles…

THE GRAVELTONES

Where?: Jagermeister stage
When?: Sunday @ 1:00pm
Who do they clash with?: Coal Chamber (Main), The Ghost Inside (Zippo), Little Caesar (Pepsi Max), Black Dogs (Red Bull)
Listen: I Want Your Love (Music Video)
Why?: 50s rock isn’t exactly what you’d expect at Download, but that doesn’t mean it can’t join in the party.

GOGOL BORDELLO

Where?: Zippo Encore stage
When?: Friday @ 8:10pm
Who do they clash with?: Bullet For My Valentine (Main), Converge (Pepsi Max), The Algorithm / FIDLAR (Red Bull)
Listen: Start Wearing Purple (Live at Coachella 2008)
Why?: Ukrainian gypsy punk. That alone should strike up question marks in your brain. Gogol Bordello are perhaps the most bizarre band on show this weekend, acrobats and all.

THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM

Where?: Jim Marshall stage
When?: Sunday @ 5:40pm
Who do they clash with?: Ghost / Airbourne (Zippo), Red Fang / Newsted (Pepsi Max), Surrender The Coast (Red Bull), Heaven’s Basement (Jagermeister)
Listen: High Lonesome (Live)
Why?: The Gaslight Anthem‘s high placement has raised a few questions, so it remains to be seen whether they will flop or end up entertaining everyone.

CROWNS

Where?: Pepsi Max stage & Jagermeister stage
When?: Saturday @ 12:25pm & 3:30pm
Who do they clash with?: Young Guns (Main), Hardcore Superstar (Zippo), Idiom (Red Bull), The Afterparty (Jagermeister) & Alice In Chains (Main), Karnivool (Zippo), Empress (Pepsi Max), Sky Valley Mistress (Red Bull)
Listen: Four Walls (Music Video)
Why?: Crowns are Kernow’s answer to Flogging Molly. Just one listen will have you hooked, they really are brilliant. They’re playing twice across the weekend, so do not fucking miss them.

ROB LYNCH

Where?: Jagermeister stage
When?: Friday @ 3:05pm
Who do they clash with?: Asking Alexandria (Main), Uriah Heep (Zippo), Hang the Bastard (Pepsi Max), Semperfi (Red Bull)
Listen: Hawking (Music Video)
Why?: Bringing acoustic to the acoustic stage is Rob Lynch, who may seem a little like a knife in a gunfight on the line-up, but will no doubt erase those suspicions immediately.

That’s it for our previews, and there’s only a few more days to go. See you at Download!
