Debut singles are tricky ones, often there to help set the sound of a band to a whole new mass of people yet to hear of their work and style, but also in the aim to promote the release it’s taken from enough for people to want to have their grubby mits on it.

Southampton’s Burn The Fleet (who probably got their name from the Thrice song of the same name) have settled upon ‘Black Holes’ as single number one for them, and what a fine choice that was. Working in with an off-set and irregular drum beat before the guitars shift from tip-toe to break in and join alongside the vocals, the single becomes an accessible yet weirdly not all too mainstream post-hardcore/alt rock package.

“We’ll lead the blind and give them eyes / We’ll clear a path to walk them by our side” is one of many dark yet with a light at the end of the tunnel lyrics that ‘Black Holes’ has to offer, and all fit in perfectly with the slightly progressive yet rough and addictive vibe the single seems to give off. It’s so hard to pin point why this is the case though, but either way it’s a winner.
