Since the last time Simple Plan played the UK back in 2008, their return has been hotly anticipated. A lot is riding on tonight’s show and fans eagerly await to be impressed. The turnout has a mix of ages, more so than that of the age range out to support the support band, We The Kings. The weather has reached the point in which no one in sight is wearing a jacket and not much can dampen the fan’s moods as the venue doors open promptly at 7:00PM. The queue outside winds right up a steep hill and well around the corner, but the fans move in as quick as they can.
As the venue begins to fill up, support band We The Kings (***) are sent on early, kicking off their set with hit from their second album, ‘She Takes Me High’. In our interview earlier that day, Travis Clark mentions that a lot rides on that one song as they open up and the band definitely don’t disappoint. Although some of the older attendants of the night don’t know who the band are, they’re still happy to watch as the band let out an incredible amount of stage energy, even turning the older fans heads when they play their sixth song, ‘The Middle’, covering Jimmy Eat World. The fans surge towards the stage during their last song, ‘Check Yes Juliet’, with every We The Kings fan in the room joining in. The opening set is impressive and succeeds in heating the room right up and getting everyone in the mood to see the evening’s headliners.
After a quick set change, the lights go down, the crowd is chanting loud for the highly anticipated Simple Plan (****). Soon enough, the band have the entire room singing along to catchy songs such as ‘Shut Up’, ‘Addicted’ and ‘Summer Paradise’. There’s no separation of age in the gig, everyone is singing, jumping, filling the room up with an intense feeling.
Throughout the set, ‘Simple Plan’ mix in a number of popular tracks including ‘I Gotta Feeling’, ‘Moves Like Jagger’, ‘Dynamite’ and ‘Sexy And I Know It’, along with a ‘No Pads, No Helmets… Just Balls’ medley. These clearly aren’’ necessary for the band in order to keep the fans interested in the 20 song set, but everyone is up to dance and join in. One encore is not enough for the band, the first of the two with the band putting all they’ve got back in to ‘Loser Of The Year’ and ‘I’m Just A Kid’ before the second encore, which sees Pierre Bouvier crack out the acoustic guitar to sing ‘Crazy’, which the crowd are happy to just sing back to and before bringing back the full band once more for set closer ‘Perfect’. The guys definitely made up for their four year long absence.
